Scalp micropigmentation

Scalp micropigmentation

Scalp Micropigmentation is the innovative cosmetic procedure of applying pigment to the scalp and hairline in the form of a realistic, undetectable tattoo to improve the appearance of thinning hair, receding hairline and balding.

The pigment is matched to the exact colour of the hair or follicle to blend in seamlessly with the hairline and scalp, using fine hair-like strokes or micro-dots, and is suitable for long, short or shaved hair. Scalp micropigmentation SMP has long-lasting, semi-permanent results, making it an ideal treatment for those who want an effective, safe cosmetic treatment to instantly improve the appearance of their thinning hair.

At BioCell Cosmetic Clinic, we care about your hair loss journey and will ensure your treatments are performed to the highest standard in our cosmetic medical clinic, surrounded by highly experienced and qualified cosmetic nurses and doctors.

What is scalp micropigmentation (SMP)?

SMP stands for Scalp Micro-Pigmentation and it is the process of applying ink to the scalp to achieve a desired cosmetic effect. Scalp micropigmentation SMP is typically used to create the illusion of fuller hair in both men and women. It is also an option for those wanting to create the appearance of the stubble effect on those choosing to shave their hair. While there are different techniques involved in scalp micropigmentation SMP, all involve enhancing the appearance of denser, thicker hair.

How does it work?

Scalp micropigmentation SMP involves a handheld electric device that implants pigment into the scalp. It can be likened to a tattoo, however does not go as deep into the skin. The most common technique is known as ‘pointillism’, a style that involves layered dots in different hues to add shadowing and depth to the scalp. The dots emulate what a natural hair follicle looks like, and are designed to complement your unique skin type. Once completed, this style of scalp micropigmentation SMP allows for added dimension and hue to the head and hair. Cases can range from subtle to impressive results, depending on the desired effect.

Who is scalp micropigmentation SMP best suited to?

Scalp micropigmentation SMP is a great option for those experiencing thinning hair or hair loss. It is a longer-term solution to hide the scalp for people experiencing alopecia or medical conditions that cause hair fall. Scalp micropigmentation SMP is not only reserved for people with obviously thinning hair, it can also be a suitable treatment for people with genetically thin hair from birth, hair transplant patients, or patients with scarring/birthmarks.

Scalp micropigmentation can:

  • Improve the appearance of thinning hair
  • Create a stubble-look for those who shave their hair
  • Provide more density in the hairline
  • Camouflage bald patches caused by scarring or alopecia areata
  • Disguise healed FUT and FUE hair transplant scars
  • Provide density after a hair transplant

How long does it last?

Scalp micropigmentation SMP can last in some cases up to eight years, but this depends on the condition of the scalp and the rate of fading over time as all skin naturally exfoliates by itself. The dryer the skin, usually the faster the rate of fading. This is important to note, as while scalp micropigmentation SMP may last many years, it will inevitably fade and is thus considered a semi-permanent treatment and touch-up may be required after 3-5years.

How much does it cost?

Pricing varies depending on the area of scalp that needs to be covered and complexity of the case. Check out our prices page for a guide, however, consultations are required to get an accurate quote. More than one treatment may be needed (ie. a touch up after the healing process has healed), and this will be discussed with your scalp micropigmentation SMP practitioner.

Does it hurt?

There may be some discomfort, dependant on client pain tolerance, however most people find the procedure relatively pain free. If required, a topical numbing cream may be applied to the scalp before the commencement of treatment.

Is it the same as a tattoo?

While scalp micropigmentation SMP may be considered as a form of tattoo, it differs from traditional tattoo as it only has semi-permanent results. This is because the pigment is water-based, not oil-based, like traditional tattoos. It is also only performed on the skin surface, making it safer than a normal tattoo.
