FUE hair transplant
What is a FUE hair transplant?
A follicular unit extraction (FUE) hair transplant involves the removal of individual hair follicles from a designated donor site (usually the back of the patients head), and the implantation of them into other areas of the scalp experiencing balding/thinning. Depending on the patient, anywhere from just a few hundred grafts up to approximately 2,500 can be harvested in one sitting. One patient may require multiple FUE hair transplant sessions, depending on the severity of hair-loss and individual expectations.
While FUE hair transplant as a procedure has advanced over the years, it is important to note that it is still considered surgery and there may be some down-time that follows. While most patients can go back to work in as little as two days after a FUE hair transplant, some patients prefer to take up to 10 days off. Patients begin to see the hair grow back from around 2 months, and the final result after the FUE hair transplant is expected between 9 to 12 months post-procedure.
What is the difference between FUE hair transplant and FUT hair transplant?
A follicular unit transplantation (FUT) hair transplant involves the excision of a strip of skin at the back of the scalp. This strip is then harvested of all it’s hair follicles, and these are then re-implanted back into the balding/thinning sections of the patients scalp. The back of the patients scalp where the strip of skin was removed is then sewn back together, leaving a long unsightly scar. It is an older method of hair transplant, and becoming less common due to the scarring and longer recovery time.
For a FUE hair transplant, each individual hair follicle is extracted one-by-one from the doner area. As each hair follicle is harvested separately and then re-implanted, a FUE hair transplant provides for a more natural result in the long-term. This newer technology is becoming more popular, due to the improved results and comfort of the procedure
Benefits of FUE hair transplant are:
- Less scarring
- More grafts can be harvested
- Greater options for future hairstyles
- Less post-operative pain
- Healing and recovery time is decreased
- Less invasive
- Donor site laxity remains the same (scalp is not tightened)
- Discrete results

What is better: PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) or FUE hair transplant?
This question is best solved on a case-to-case basis during an in-person consultation with one of our team member. In most cases for hair-loss, PRP is recommended as the initial treatment for hair fall control, regrowth and maintenance. This includes if the patient is definite in their choice to undergo FUE hair transplant, as it prepares the hair for a hair transplant and improves the success rate of the FUE hair transplant. The science of PRP for hair loss is proven in its potential to re-grow dormant hair follicles, its ability to control excessive and problematic hair shed and improve hair transplant outcomes.
PRP involves micro-injections of the patients own plasma into the areas of concern on the scalp. These bolus injections are rich in platelets encasing growth-factors that stimulate hair regrowth, increase in hair fibre thickness, and increase in hair density. It is also excellent in preventing the hair from excessively falling, slowing down the rate of unnatural hair loss
PRP for hair loss in itself usually yields great results and thus is used in conjunction with FUE hair transplant. Many patients are satisfied with the results of PRP for hair loss alone and decide to stay on this treatment, particularly those who are mildly thinning and/or not very advanced in their hair-loss. PRP is less invasive and relies on natural, autologous components to give the hair follicles that extra help in long-term growth and survival.
In situations where hair-loss is moderate to advanced and/or causing great distress, FUE hair transplant is often suitable. In this case, the patient is highly encouraged to begin PRP hair treatments prior to their FUE hair transplant, in order to regenerate as much natural hair as possible and to get hair-loss under control. Consistent PRP treatment is strongly suggested post-FUE hair transplant, as it not only allows for the best chance of graft-survival for the newly implanted hairs, but stops the rest of the hair from falling out, and keeps the hair looking full.
A FUE hair transplant without PRP for hair loss before, during, and after treatment is not advised. It can be done, however avoidance of any future treatment with PRP for hair loss may cause the hair to continue along its path of hair-loss, causing the hair to look thin again.
Here at BioCell Cosmetic Clinic, we care about your hair and in order to give you the greatest longevity out of your FUE hair transplant procedure, we need to be able to use as much natural hair as possible in order to avoid over-harvesting the donor-site.
What about a FUE hair transplant in Turkey?
While there are many reputable international clinics that perform acceptable transplants, there are equally as many that leave the patient with less than desirable results. Let’s discuss the pros and cons of flying overseas for FUE hair transplant.
PROS OF FUE HAIR TRANSPLANT IN SYDNEY
More cost-effective
Some overseas clinics offer packages, with accommodation and transfers included in the FUE hair transplant price. While this may seem good on paper, what it doesn’t account for is other travel expenses, including flights and spending money. When you account for these factors, the prices are quite similar and afford the patient convenience – which, in many ways, is priceless after undergoing invasive surgery, particularly in unfamiliar surroundings.
Cost break-down example:
FUE hair transplant in Turkey = $2500
+ flights = $2000
+ loss of 2 weeks wages = $2000
+ spending money = $2000
= approx $8,500
FUE hair transplant in Sydney with BioCell Cosmetic Clinic offers better value for money in this instance, and in some cases is even cheaper!

Comfort
Patients can return to the comfort of their own home on the day of the hair transplant to recover in a familiar environment. Recovery time is anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the patients willingness to present in public with post-surgical markings. If the patient would prefer not to be seen in their work-place after a hair transplant, many patients opt to work from home as most people feel up to it, in the days following their hair transplant. Relax knowing that you are healing in a safe place. There’s no place like home after all!
Safety
High standards in regards to Australian health guidelines and regulations for surgery and medical practitioners. These can be accessed by anyone at anytime, and are transparent to both consumers and health-professionals. Different standards may be employed overseas, or may be loosely monitored. At BioCell Cosmetic Clinic we have certified nurses and doctors on site throughout the whole procedure.

Usually the entire head does not need to be shaved, however in some cases it may be decided that the process will be faster and more effective if this is done. The donor site (usually a rectangular section at the back of the head) is always shaved in order for accurate removal of each individual hair follicle. In some cases, the receiving site is shaved in order to make it easier for implantation. This will depend on the individual’s pattern of hair and is decided by the team during the consult.
